C.F. Moller Architects recently completed this extension to the University College Vitus Bering Denmark in Horsens, named the Vitus Bering Innovation Park. The addition to the 1970’s structure aimed to place teaching and entrepreneur start-up office facilities side by side. The new building sits on a brick base – the same as its predecessor, but it is much more innovative in both design and its impact on the environment. The six story building, though rectangular in shape, appears to be in constant motion due to its glassy strips that create the illusion of a spiral shift upwards. The spiral sequence is mirrored in the interior as well through the large, bright green spiraling staircase that lands in a different position on each level, framing the atrium as the central core of the building. The basic floor plan is simple and flexible, to adapt to the needs of the University. This complex is also one of the first office complexes in Denmark that has attained the classification of a low-energy class 1, meaning it is twice as energy efficient as the minimum required by Danish building regulations. Innovative factors, such as highly insulated windows and air conditioning that adjusts itself according to the number of people present in each room, lead to this achievement.
